Cranes
There are fifteen species of Crane with the following having been seen at WWT Slimbridge, Black-Crowned Crane, Eurasian Crane, Demoiselle Crane, Grey-Crowned Crane and the Red-Crowned Crane:-

Cranes are tall long-necked and long-legged birds of the family Gruidae. They look similar to Herons but Cranes fly with their necks outstretched while the Heron will fly with a hunched neck

OVERVIEW

Black Crowned Crane.
A Black head, Grey bill, Red cheeks with White behind the eye, a crest of Golden feathers, and a Red inflatable pouch hanging from the throat. The plumage is mainly Dark Grey to Black with Chestnut secondary feathers and White wing coverts. The legs and feet are Dark Grey to Black.

Demoiselle Crane.
The head has a light Grey stripe from the bill to the nape and a White feather plume from the eye down the neck. Light Grey plumage with a Dark Grey head and neck, the breast is Black, the eyes are Orange Red and the Legs and feet are Dark Grey.

Eurasian Crane.
A Black forehead, featherless Red crown, and a White streak from behind the eye to the upper back. The plumage is Slate Grey, the wing plumes are Black and the legs and feet are dark Grey.

Grey Crowned Crane.
A Black head, a Grey bill, White cheeks with Red, a Red patch at the back of the head, a crest of Golden feathers, and a Red gular pouch hanging from the throat. The plumage is mainly Grey with White and Gold wings. The legs and feet are Dark Grey.

Red Crowned Crane.
The cheeks, throat and neck are Black, the crown is Red and the bill is Olive Green. The plumage is White in colour with Black secondaries and White tail feathers. The legs and feet are Grey/Black.

They can be found in the following zones: -

Black Crowned Crane. - Lesser Flamingo Zone.

Demoiselle Crane. - Geese of the World Zone.

Eurasian Crane. - Back from the Brink Zone.

Grey Crowned Crane. - Lesser Flamingo Zone.

Red Crowned Crane. - Otter Pool Zone.


Did You Know?
The Black Crowned Crane and the Grey Crowned Crane nest in trees.
Demoiselle means maiden or young lady in French, with the crane being named by Marie Antoinette.
During the mating season, the cranes perform dancing displays by opening their wings and leaping in large flocks.
The Grey Crowned Crane is the national bird of Uganda and features on their flag.
